Filmlover Mo: Sharing my Thoughts of Hong Kong with the LomoChrome Metropolis Film

A picture is worth a thousand words. Mo, a Hong Kong filmlover, believes that photography is the best way to record the various changes in Hong Kong. Recently, he tried film photography for the first time and started traveling around Hong Kong with his film camera, hoping to capture the best moments of this city. In this interview, Mo will share his cool street photos taken using the LomoChrome Metropolis 2021 formula . Check out his interview below!

Hello Mo! Could you introduce yourself to the readers of our Online Magazine?

Hello! I am Mo, a 2nd year University student studying Graphic Design. Photography was one of the subjects I have learnt in my year one course. During the projects and assignments, I have discovered the fun of street photography. After that, I bought my first digital camera by chance and started my street photography journey.

How did you start your film photography journey?

I started film photography in last three months. Before buying a film camera, I always edit digital photos by using film effects as I love the unique feature and tones of films.

In my opinion, photography is a tool for me to feel more about the world and allows me to capture memories. People will cherish things until they have lost it. But luckily, we have the tools to keep the memories we have had before.

What is your most commonly used photographic equipment?

As I do not have much film knowledge, I mainly shoot with one camera and one lens. The most commonly used lens is 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. It seems to be a simple combination, but it is enough for me to shoot on the streets. The large aperture is also very suitable for me to shoot at night.

How was your first impression of the LomoChrome Metropolis film?

By knowing that this film would enhance the red color, I tried to capture Hong Kong inconic red objects on streets, like red taxi, red signboards etc. I am sure that the result will not disappoint you.

What photo style do you think is suitable for this film?

Although it is a cool-toned film, it surprisingly treats the skin tones as good as warm-toned films. The enhancement on the red color gives the cinematic feel that everyone likes. The feeling is just like the classic Hong Kong movies.

How was it like when you were shooting this new formula?

This is definitely an all-round film!

During this shooting, I shot the whole day and the performance of ISO 400 was very satisfying at night time. I think you can try ISO100-400 for different grain effects.

Can you share your shooting inspiration with us?

The photography lesson that I mentioned previously affected me the most. In the lessons, I learnt about camera characteristics, and how to capture different angles. It is a special way to document our daily life. I usually shoot about Hong Kong street photography and discovered that the interaction between people can affect one another. The thing I like the most is the warmness and kindness of Hong Kong people.

What story do you like to bring out through photography?

This city keeps changing, which I hope to use photography to capture the best moments. A picture is worth a thousand words. I believe that the power of the photograph can attract the public's attention.

Through my lens, I hope to share with you the city that I see, and love. By sharing my photos on social media, people around the world can know more about Hong Kong.

What are your future plans?

Besides portrait photography (which I am trying now), I will try landscape photography. The photographic equipment cost is quite high, and also need to test photgrapher's physical strength and patience while shooting. I really appreciate the persistence of landscape photographers, and this is something I still need to learn more about.

Which among the photos of this series is your favorite?

I really like the simplicity of this photo, which is an 80's Benz parking on the street in Kowloon City. The tall buildings were reflected on the car windows. This may not be the most interesting photo composition, but it seems to take me back to the glorious 80's era.
