Shoot Different with Community LomoKino LomoAmigo Gauthierdumonde

He advises us to keep shooting and shooting not only for the love of analogue but also for self-improvisation! Why not try and try until you succeed, right?

And I do agree in the advice he gives not only for us Lomographers but also for LomoKino movie makers. This week’s LomoKino LomoAmigo is definitely someone to watch out for! So head on and read our interview with Wouter or gauthierdumonde, this week’s LomoKino LomoAmigo.

Name: Wouter Van den Berge

Location: Ghent, Belgium, Western Europe, World
Number of years as a Lomographer: 7
Number of years in the Community: 2

Tell us about yourself. What do you do for a living? What are your interests?

I am a historian and I did research on education and diversity for the university of Ghent. Now I work for a non-profit organization which develops and organizes projects on education and diversity. I used to be an electro-house-tech DJ but I got literally tired of the late hours. So while at it, I started to look for a new interest. I returned to one of my teen hobbies, photography. I saw beautiful pictures made by something called a Holga, so I bought it. I did not use my Holga a lot because my pictures with the Holga turned out quite different than the ones I had seen. Then someone gave me an old Contaflex SLR and I bought a Horizon Kompakt and gradually got into Lomography. I think my first cross-processed roll was five years after I got the Holga. When I joined the Community, I got into a shooting frenzy, so all of my time goes to shooting and developing film.

Describe the LomoKino in five words.

Challenging, creative, new level of Lomography called LomoKinography!

How did you like shooting with the LomoKino?

I realy like shooting with the Lomokino because I have to think different. When I shoot Lomographs I try to see the world around me in a Lomographic way — through a plastic lens. The Lomokino challenges me even more. Now I have to see my surroundings in a lo-fi moving way.

RobotKino. She is Not.

What or who has inspired you to purchase and use the LomoKino?

I was inspired by this LomoKino movie:

It was just perfect and I was intrigued by the comments. People were pleased to finally see a good LomoKino movie. So I started checking out some other movies and honestly, a lot of them were not that good. Anyway, I decided a few years ago to be a photographer and not to start shooting movies. I made this decision when I got a Super 8 camera from a friend. I saw this LomoKino movie on the first birthday of my daughter and I wanted to shoot [that day] with a LomoKino. So when I was going to pick up her birthday cake at the bakery, I made little detour and I came home not only with the cake but with a Lomokino. I knew it was going to be hard to shoot a good movie and it is challenging. I am still working on that but I hope to do some nice ones in the future.

Any funny or strange encounters you’ve had with it?

I just shot a LomoKino movie, a short and static one. I asked tourists to take a picture of me with one of my LC-A’s while filming them. Normally it is the other way around since the tourists asked me to take a picture of them. So I had a few nice talks with both young and old people and I always had to explain why I was shooting analogue.

If you could shoot any person alive or dead (or imaginary) with your LomoKino, who would it be and why?

A friend of mine plays in a cool rock band called Kapitan Korsakov and I would like to make a little clip with them. The problem is they are still under contract, never have time, and my LomoKino skills aren’t yet at the point that they will make time for me. Someday, I’ll film them.

Kindly share to us any LomoKino movie you love the most.

An Analogue Afternoon

Any future plans with your LomoKino? More shoots or a full-length film perhaps?

I wanna do longer movies, about five minutes. I don’t want a story, the images should keep the viewers attention. So I will need some great ideas, a lot of practice on getting the right timing plus some models. A lot of work but next summer I will shoot it. Now I am just going to practice shooting short clips of maximum two rolls of film.

Your advice to future LomoKino users.

The same advice I give to starting Lomographers (but this time in capitals:) USE IT. Some of my friends have a Diana F+ and they shoot one roll a year. They are always waiting for the right moment, with the right people and the right light and so. When this moment happens and they have their camera, they just take bad shots. Anyone can do Lomography, but unless you have natural talent, you can’t expect to get mind-blowing results when you only use your camera once a year. You have to learn to see the world through a plastic lens, in a cross-processed way. If you can take a cool pic in a dull place, then you are going to rock when that special moment comes. The same goes for the LomoKino. Don’t wait for inspiration, a good story and nice actors. Go out and shoot with it! Currently I am in the process of learning to shoot the LomoKino and my movies suck. But I will know how to use it when that creative moment comes.

It's really great to read this! I've been following @gauthierdumonde for six months or so, and I think I'd assess him and his work as follows: he's extremely honest, he's unconventional, he's seriously dedicated to what he does, he LOVES collecting, shooting, fixing and breaking cameras, he's definitely crazy (but in a good way!), he doesn't crave popularity, he's modest, he's amazingly creative, he's very knowledgeable and shares his advice generously, and his photos and films demonstrate the intelligence, originality, passion and poetic sensitivity of a true artist. Plus he's funny as hell ;-) Wouter, you are a genuine Lomo spirit, and I salute you...!
