Guadeloupe Islands in the Eye of Sarah Witt With LomoChrome Metropolis 120

With the images of her last trip, Sarah Witt invites us to discover Guadeloupe from a different angle. In addition to her artistic gaze on the islands, the use of LomoChrome Metropolis 120 allowed her to obtain different colors from the ones we find in contemporary postcards. The French photographer takes full advantage of the desaturation and strong shadows offered by our LomoChrome film to create original shots.

Hello Sarah, could you introduce yourself to the readers of Lomography Magazine?

My name is Sarah Witt, I am a freelance photographer and I live in Biarritz in the south west of France. I started with travel reports, then surf photography. Recently, I started doing photojournalism while keeping an artistic touch, especially because I use film.

Why did you want to become a photographer?

In 2015, I got a summer job as a flight attendant at Air France on long-haul flights. In the same week, I could be in Beijing then in Bamako. I wanted to capture the atmosphere of each stopover, to bring back with me the smells, the faces, the atmospheres of each city, then to share them through my images. I think it was from that moment that I never let go of my camera.

Can you describe the importance of film photography in your practice?

I am very attached to film and I try to shoot on film as soon as possible. At the moment, I do all my personal photo reports in medium format and I sometimes manage to convince some clients to trust me to do their film shoots. I like the idea of going back to the very essence of photography, of taking the time to frame, to wait before receiving the images, then to discover all the imperfections linked to this method which for me is by far the most beautiful.

You have just returned from a trip to Guadeloupe, could you tell us a little more about your stay?

I'm used to travelling a lot with my little sister, we love going on surf trips together, it's our thing. And I love photographing her in those moments! I feel super inspired during these trips. She has just moved to Guadeloupe to do her medical internship there, so I joined her to discover her world - and photograph it.

Our LomoChrome Metropolis film has an aesthetic that is more commonly associated with street photography. What do you think of the rendering in a more natural environment? What do you like most about the LomoChrome Metropolis?

I was pleasantly surprised with the rendering of my photos with the LomoChrome Metropolis. When I was shooting, everything around me was very colorful: turquoise blues, azure skies, very green vegetation. I was afraid that the rendering in photography would be too vivid, too pronounced. Thanks to the slightly faded colors of the LomoChrome Metropolis, the rendering is a little desaturated and this creates an atmosphere and pastel tones that I really like.

Is there another Lomography film you'd like to try?

I would love to try the Berlin Kino B&W 120 for a personnal project of nudes in a studio.

Any upcoming projects you would like to tell us about?

I have other travel plans coming up, including a reporting project that will take place in India. I am in the preparatory phase of this work, I plan to go there in August. And of course I plan to take analogue pictures!
