Into the Wild with Sergio Castañera

Photographer and adventurer Sergio Castañera is on a mission to explore the wilder corners of the world. He recently took some Lomography Color Negative 800 and Berlin Kino B&W films with him to document his latest escapade and shared the results with us.

Hi Sergio, please introduce yourself to the readers of our Online Magazine?

Hello! My name is Sergio Castañera but everyone calls me Casta. I am 24 years old and I am currently studying and working as a photographer and transporter, which also allows me to travel in a camper van and take advantage of it: sleep in it when I travel and always carry my camera while discovering new places.

Tell us about your photographic background. What is your story? When did you start photographing?

Since I was little I have always been a creative and curious person. Because of this and having discovered digital photography since I was young, it allowed me to continue exploring and experimenting now with photography.

These wonderful photos were taken with the Color Negative 800 and Berlin Kino B&W films: what are the features that impressed you the most?

What I liked most about the Color Negative 800 is being able to have more light sensitivity and be able to have faster shutter speeds. It is a fairly sharp film despite its ISO 800, the colors for cloudy days are really very beautiful. For the Berlin Kino what strikes me the most is the soft contrast it gives you: the photos are very clean and elegant.

Which camera did you use for these photos?

For these photos we have used a Nikon f4 and we are very happy with the results: it has been a good combination of equipment and films.

Did the kind of film influence the choice of the location?

Many of the chosen locations have been the result of exploring with the camera inside the backpack without choosing a specific destination; others were shot inside the house to get something more traditional and others in some of our favorite places that inspire us the most.

For the Color Negative 800 we wanted to try it in a more natural environment and take advantage of that humid and cold mountain climate due to its contrast and cold temperature as we thought it would have been a good option. For the Berlin Kino we wanted to get the most of it in interiors, although we couldn't resist seeing how it worked in nature and we were quite surprised.

Nature is very often present in your works: what is your relationship with nature?

I am a person who has always lived in Madrid, one of the largest cities in Spain, and places where there are many people have always overwhelmed me, so I always try to flee to areas of nature or choose destinations where I try to meet as few people as possible. That is the reason why I almost always end up working in the wild.

Who or what inspires your work?

The people I surround myself with are always the ones who inspire me the most, that's why I try to include them in my work in some way, either directly or indirectly. These people are my girlfriend Andrea, who appears in many of these photos, or friends of mine who are also very cool. That's why I always try to escape from Madrid surrounded by these people.

Do you have any interesting projects or collaborations planned that you would like to share with us?

Right now a project that I would like to share with you is verde.anaranjado on Instagram, a small photographic diary that Andrea and I are making together where we share our little trips and adventures with a different point of view on Analogico. I encourage you to stop by to say hello and be able to see our photos.
