Candeeland, Norderney and the LomoChrome Turquoise: a Match Made in Heaven!

1

In celebration of the most awaited film stock comeback, Community member Candeeland aka Dani takes us on a journey to an almost forgotten wonderland of blues and golds of the LomoChrome Turquoise.

Hi Dani, welcome back to the Lomography Magazine! You exclusively tested a much sought-after roll of LomoChrome Turquoise for us - what did you decide to do with it?

I almost lost my marbles when you asked me, if I would want to test one of the few remaining rolls of LomoChrome Turquoise! I, like many other Lomographers, desperately want this great film back. The timing could not have been better, as we were just going to the North Sea for our vacation and I absolutely could not wait to see the mad colors of the Turquoise at the sea. Luckily we had blue skies and sunshine, perfect conditions for crazy color shifts.

What do you like most about the Turquoise and what are the subjects that really pop when snapped with LomoChrome Turquoise?

Reversing the usual colors, making a blue sky glow orange - there's something so science-fictiony about it! The images seem like they're from another planet, I love it. In my opinion, the film comes across best in landscape shots. You have to like the fact that people look like smurfs. I always think of the old Eiffel 65 hit: “I'm blue da ba dee da ba di...” ☺

This roll of Turquoise was of course long expired - what are your experiences with expired film in general, and do you like to experiment with it?

Since I prefer to shoot with slide film that I cross-process, the films I use are mostly expired anyway and some of them are already several decades old. I have made the experience that a good lab gets the much better results when scanning. Either I am not technically skilled enough to set my scanner correctly so that the images are not too crazily noisy (coarse-grained), or my scanner does not manage it that well.

There are often discussions about the extent to which analogue film material should be digitally altered. I tend to be one of those who want to "improve" as little as possible, so that the analogue look is not lost and the respective characteristics of the film are well accentuated, but with the very old films, I sometimes reach my limits when digitizing.

Once the new formula of the Turquoise is finally available - what will you do with your very first roll?

Quite simple: first of all, I'll stock up and secure as many rolls as possible. :D

Then I've been dreaming of a trip to Iceland for a while, maybe next year I can finally do it and capture the unique landscape there with the Turquoise. In Sweden, the Turquoise has already been with me and captured many unforgettable moments.

Do you have any tips for those Lomographers who will hold the Turquoise in their hands for the first time next summer?

Actually, I'm a Lomonaut that strictly follows the golden rule #10: don't follow any rules and just go for it! But personally, I think the fantastic colors of the Turquoise come out best with a wonderful bright blue sky.

Thank you Lomography for letting me test your awesome film, I'm really looking forward to the re-release!

Many thanks to you Dani for this wonderful insight! We are super excited to see your snapshots with the LomoChrome Turquoise 2021 Formula!
