A Review of Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens, the Most-Awaited Twist in a Wide Angle Lens

2

Getting to try the Atoll Ultra-Wide has been a delight. A wide angle lens is a must have for a photographer. It s a classic lens that allows you to stretch what you frame. There are so many fields where a wide angle comes in handy that it is hard to restrain to a single purpose.

The Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens upgrades the game for wide angles, delivering impressively straighter lines. Corners are improved, and the remarkable close up to a 10 cm focal point, opens a new frontier of quirky close-ups.

Curious to See More?

This lens gets into your face. There is no other way to put it. And it's beautiful.

The relationship between subject and photographer gets to a whole new level. While shooting with this lens, I have to admit, at first I had mixed feelings of excitement and shyness. The 10 cm close up is an excellent feature, something that we are not used to having in portraiture. The most common lens for a portrait is 85 mm, which means that the physical distance between photographer and subject is considerable.

To say that you are in their face is an euphemism. Ten centimeters is much closer to a macro position rather than of a portrait. That's where your relationship with your subject is drastically different. Therefore it opens up a much wider possibility and ideas towards portraiture.

What kind of subject could be well suited for this lens? Moreover, what kind of peculiar angle can you portray that subject? Questions start floating into your mental creativity box while shooting with the Atoll. That is the feeling I love to have with my tools. They become an integral part of your creative process, something that you consciously choose as it allows you to convey your vision and ideas.

Adding Movements

Wide angles are often used in landscape photography as they are well-suited for the task. In my next quest with this lens, I wanted to find a location that would allow for more elements into my composition. I set my mind on the amusement park. When I decided to shoot there, the Atoll not only allowed me to get as much as possible into my frame, but it also translated precisely that mood of fun and excitement that the funfair gives.

This lens expresses the amazement in front of your eyes as you buzz from one ride to the next. And, the more you look around you; the more you see, the more more you want to do. Working with long exposures, the fun fair lights start to convey that sense of dizziness that one has when riding from rollercoaster to rollercoaster.

I was ecstatic about the relationship I was building with this lens. I had a concrete feeling of connection with my tool. The camera was at my service and it delivered what I was looking for. I didn't have to worry about missing something from my gear; I was free to move around without concerns and catch whatever was grabbing my attention and my eyes, in a dance between my canvas, the park, and myself, immersed in my ideas and creations.
