Pictures in Charcoal: Grenville’s Photographs with the Fantome Kino
16 Share TweetLomographer grenville gives justice to the name of the Lomography Fantome Kino film with these rich, dramatic monochromatic shots that emit mystery and enigma. True to also their signature style with creating expressive and phantasmagoric shots, the Fantome Kino takes their fantasy to the next level.
With a light sensitivity of 8 ISO, the Fantome Kino gives more room and control for surreal and dreamy experimentations. The low light sensitivity allows more abstraction of captured reality, and Grenville does this even in the simplest scenes found in daily life. Normal items, straightforward portraits are reinvented into charcoal-like sketches as they tether between blurry and sharp.
The photographs are also reminiscent of carbon prints or sumi-e ink paintings with how deep and rich the blacks are. The whites are pure and contrasting. The compositions rely on lights, shapes, and distance.
The Lomographer is fond of black and white photography, having also worked with the Babylon Kino and Berlin Kino before. Their unique, surreal aesthetic was initially shaped by the Diana Mini and the Holga pinhole camera.
