Portrait Photographer Yan's Impression on Dreamy Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens Pictures

Dongseok Yang is a popular South Korean photographer for his candid and natural shots on the subject. This time with the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens, he brought a new look of dreamy bokeh. We interviewed him for a review of this special lens.

Hi, Yan. Please introduce yourself to Lomographers.

Hi, I am portrait photographer Dongseok Yang, with the nickname, yan_pic. I am pleased to introduce myself to Lomography.

Since when did you take pictures?

It has been 14 years since I have started photography. I just started casually when I bought a small camera and took pictures of the people around me. I wasn't good back then, but my friends were so happy to see the pictures I shot for them. This is how I fell in love with photography. It seems to be the reason why I still treat the pictures as a gift for the people, rather than the artwork for my career.

What impression did you get from Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens?

I wasn't very familiar with the focusing method of the lens, so it took some time for me to adapt at first. Then I found the lens' deep color and dreamy bokeh effect so attractive that overweighs the inconvenience of manual focusing. I think if you take a close-up shot against the backdrop of a forest or a sparkling reflection of ripples, you can produce even more interesting pictures.

Looking at your Instagram, It seems like your pictures express the individual's characteristics very well, at the same time having your own styles. Do you have a particular type of photo you pursue?

I like natural and candid pictures, so I emphasize 'reality'. I capture the pose or the facial expressions that the subject would actually make in that background and situation. Then within the frame, I try to add at least one interesting component to the picture. It could be a prop, the background, or the expressions.

Could you share your shooting tips?

I think it's important to capture the facial expressions naturally and the atmosphere of the scene in the picture. Instead of pressing the shutter to the rhythm with the structure of the picture in mind, I often use the continuous shooting function with the model moving slowly. Even when filming, I constantly talk to the subject. It is more important for me to be a medium to create a comfortable atmosphere than the content of the conversation.

Is there any other Lomography products you like?

I've always liked Lomography's negative films. I especially like to use Lomo films at colorful indoors with high chromatics.

Do you have any plans? What is your goal as a photographer?

Actually I always just have a thought of taking pictures that can show the most out of the subject, I never really thought of myself as someone who produces artworks. That's why I don't have a specific goal. I just want to keep taking pictures of people.

I do have a plan, though! I got a small studio for my workplace. I actually prefer shooting in different places, so I used to rent the places I like. But I still had some areas I wanted to customize. This time I am trying out shooting at the space that is entirely according to my preference.
