Indoor Tipsters: Building Your Own Lomowall

5

Staying inside as the world heals itself is everyone's responsibility. It may be a bit difficult now but rest assured that it's done for everyone's best interest. So do your part and stay at home! :)

With that said, there's still a lot of things you can do within the confines of your home to stay creative. One of those things is building a Lomowall! Don't worry, you can scale everything down to space and materials you have and still have a great quarantine project to show to your family and friends (of course, when the time is right for social gatherings!) In this tutorial, we show you some tips and tricks we've learned after making a few of them ourselves.

Before we get started, we'd like to give you a backgrounder on the Lomowall. It's a fun and artistic way to showcase all your beautiful photographs (or other people's work) in a creative. Imagine an art installation composed of photographs - hundreds or even thousands of them! Cool, right? What's great about it is that it's also a bonding experience especially for art fairs, galleries, and parties where people come together to share their love for analogue photography. Lomography Embassy Stores and headquarters all over the world have spearheaded community experiences like Lomowall builds in the past and hopefully once again in the future when it's safer and better outside. Now, on to the tutorial!

Pick a space

Just about any space will make do for a Lomowall! Yes, it's that versatile. You can choose to use your room or any wall inside the house to mount your soon-to-be masterpiece. Flat surfaces work best in our experience so keep that in mind!

This is probably one of the tougher steps since as photographers, we almost want to put up everything we've ever shot and put them on display! Check your prints to see which ones you'd like to see on your Lomowall and try to visualize how it'll look.

Plan your pattern

In general, Lomowalls usually have a pattern to follow to create a one-of-a-kind artistic experience for the viewers. The photos can repeat themselves to create an image or they can be as random as it gets. As the master planner of your work of art, the choice falls on you so have at it! Make your vision a reality and create a plan that will wow anyone that looks at your creation.

Tip: Try using different colors in your Lomowall for an eccentric mix of visuals or use different shades of the same color to create a color spectrum effect.

Plot your prints

There are two ways you can do this: one is to use a piece of board (wood or paper) or go stick your prints direct to the wall. some of our huge builds require using a board before sticking the photos so they can be arranged to fill a whole gallery space. It can also make things exciting as you can change the sequence anytime you feel like it.

With the board method, you can plot the prints by making a graph where you can fill in the photos according to your pattern. One thing that we do is divide the portions of the board and mark them with pencils so we know just where to put the prints. For the wall method, you may also use a pencil to mark it or some length of yarn to see where your photos are supposed to go.

Stick your photos on

Remember the pattern you made before? It's now time to follow that and place your prints. Remember, there's no perfect way to build a Lomowall. It's all up to you how you do it and the most important thing is that you have fun doing it. you'll be amazed at how exciting things get when you see the pieces falling into place. It's like a big jigsaw puzzle and you're the designer, builder, and viewer all rolled into one.

And you're done! Marvel at your creation and enjoy the fruits of your labor. You can show it to friends and family via social media but trust us, they'll love it even more in person. Now you have something to look forward to once the quarantine ends. Not only did you get a creative challenge done under isolation, but you also got to redecorate your space with your very own print portfolio!
