Timeline: Lomography Petzval Art Lenses

This year, we're welcoming a new Art Lens addition – the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens. Retaining the classic features that Joseph Petzval pioneered and hosting creative features for modern photography, the new Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII SLR Art Lens will please photographers and filmmakers alike.

The Lomography Petzval Art Lens family is an extension of the original Petzval Lens created in 1840 by Professor Joseph Petzval. The lens has a legendary reputation among Portrait Lenses, and we thought that it would be really fantastic if we could enjoy it today. And so, nearly two centuries later, we introduced the New Petzval Art Lens. Here is a brief timeline documenting our journey to create a lens worthy of bringing Josef Petzval's optical design to discerning photographers and videographers.

2020: The Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII SLR Art Lens - In Celebration of 180 years of Josef Petzval's Design

This year, we welcome the latest addition to our Art Lens family — the New Petzval 80.5 mm f/1.9 MKII Art Lens, an ode to the 180th anniversary of Joseph Petzval's iconic lens design. Its unique dual aperture system allows you to easily move between the speed and versatility of its stopless aperture diaphragm and the use of creative aperture plates via the Waterhouse Aperture System. The new Petzval lens stays true to the optics and materials of the original lens but allows creative experimentation geared towards modern photographers, and filmmakers. Designed for easy integration within the professional workflow, whether for photography or filming, analogue or digital, this lens would prove to be an indispensable tool in creating visual content that stands out.

2019: The New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens

The New Petzval 55 mm f/1.7 MKII Art Lens promises versatility for the growing number of mirrorless camera shooters. The lens features a focal length of 55mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.7, making it suitable for capturing the bigger picture as well as the subtle isolation of subjects. It is also designed to support 4K video shooting and enhanced sharpness across the entire f/stop range. And of course, the signature bokeh is not to be missed — finally, photographers and filmmakers using the newest mirrorless cameras can now employ the Petzval aesthetic in their creative endeavors.

2015: The New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens

Still keeping Joseph Petzval’s original lens design in mind, we built the New Petzval 58 with a maximum aperture of f/1.9 and a 58mm focal length. What’s more, it was equipped with the Bokeh Control Ring, which allows the user to adjust the swirl of the bokeh effect. By simply rotating the ring from 1 to 7, photographers have the option to make the swirl subtle or strong.

2013: The New Petzval 85 Art Lens

A true labor of love. We started from scratch, studying documents and handling as many original Petzval lenses as possible so that we could somehow experience the passion and ingenuity of Joseph Petzval. Our goal was to make this impeccable lens available for modern-day digital and analogue photographers. We worked with Zenit to realize this vision, and together, created the New Petzval 85 Art Lens. This lens produces photographs with a distinctive look — sharp and crisp in the center, swirly bokeh effects, vignetting, and intense color saturation, giving photographers and filmmakers a creative way of shooting photos and videos.
